|Pairin: 'Missing funds' a political
The Star: Friday, August 21, 1998
KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah chief minister Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan yesterday described the alleged missing RM4bil from Yayasan Sabah as ''wild political imagination."
''I was trying to look to see where the RM4bil (losses) came from. I do not know what they are talking about," he told reporters after yesterday's State Assembly sitting.
He was asked about Parti Bersekutu's challenge to PBS and Barisan Nasional for a public debate on the matter and Gaya MP Philip Yong's police report, followed by former Borneo Mail editor C.C. Pung's ACA report on the alleged losses.
Pairin said that the previous Berjaya government had failed to update Yayasan accounts and the accounts were updated only when the PBS government took over.
He said during the PBS reign from 1985 to 1994, the accounts were kept in order.
Pairin, the PBS president, said Bersekutu's public debate call was nothing but a ''political gimmick" that was surfacing just before state elections were due.
